Born from a deep-rooted appreciation for fine foods, Nick Ambeliotis founded Mediterra Cafe to satisfy his longtime passion, and to provide a warm and inviting gathering space for Pittsburgh natives and visitors alike.
Nick first opened our Sewickley cafe in June of 2018 with the mission of serving high quality coffee, pastries, breakfast and lunch, in addition to hard-to-find cheeses, charcuterie and more. All of our retail items are hand selected by Nick himself, and every item that comes out of our kitchen is made using fresh, top quality ingredients. In October 2020, our family grew when we added our Mt. Lebanon cafe location to the mix.
No matter which location you patronize, we’re committed to providing our customers with more than just superior meals. At Mediterra Cafe, we promise a unique experience that, while in many ways feels like a far-away European cafe, also feels as warm and inviting as your very own home.
As a family-owned and operated business, we’ve all found our niche. All of the delicacies found in our pastry case are created by Nick’s daughter-in-law and Head Pastry Chef Aundrea Ambeliotis, who brings her artistic eye and creative flair to all of our pastry items and cakes. Our outstanding Roman-style pizzas are handcrafted by Nick’s son, Anthony Ambeliotis, who also works in our Bakehouse as Head of Production.
Nick’s career in food spans decades and, in typical Mediterra fashion, centers around family. Nick’s father, Michael Ambeliotis, owned a grocery store in Ohio, and when Nick took it over as an adult, he began stocking the shelves with obscure ingredients from around the world. This led Nick to a wide-ranging career scouring Europe for the finest cheeses, olive oils, pasta, and charcuterie. It was during those travels that he developed an appreciation for well-made artisan bread, which grew to become a true passion. Eventually, he left his job, sold his house, and put everything he had into building a commercial artisan bakery.
In 2001, his dream became a reality when he founded our Pittsburgh bakery, Mediterra Bakehouse. In 2002, he rented 4,000 square feet in an industrial park just outside of downtown Pittsburgh. Eventually, he recruited the help of his children and their partners: Mike and Aundrea, Anthony, Nicole and Garrett, and Nick. Today, following 15 years of relentless growth, our family business serves local farmers markets and patrons, as well as commercial clients including local restaurants, grocery stores, hotels and resorts.
